This past weekend I went to see Blades of Glory starring Will Ferrell and Jon Heder. The basic plot line of the movie is pretty simple as you probably know from watching the commercials: Ferrell and Heder are two of the best male figure skaters in the world until their rivalry gets them thrown out of the sport and leads them to come back as the first male-male pair in couples figure skating. While the storyline is very basic and predictable, neither of those things really matter in this sort of comedy. You don’t come to a movie like this to see a great movie… you come to be mindlessly entertained by low-brow tactics such as crotch grabbing, nut busting, and other such juvenile physical humor. Luckily this film brings all that and more to audience in great abundance! You get everything from Ferrell holding Heder over his head by the crotch to Heder sliding Pete Rose style half-naked over ice to an almost beheading by ice skate to keep you laughing and cringing all at the same time.
Of course there’s more to the movie than just the physical humor between the two main characters (although that would have been enough for what I was expecting honestly) such as the love story between Heder and Jenna Fischer (who has an AMAZING scene of her in some sexy lingerie!), the wacked out brother and sister skating team played by Will Arnett and Amy Poehler, and Craig T. Nelson as the skating coach who developed the most dangerous figure skating move ever seen. This ensemble cast really added to the overall comedic value of the movie in a huge way. While Ferrell and Heder get all the credit on the posters, this movie wouldn’t have been anywhere near as entertaining without the support of these other great actors. They basically took what could have been done in a four minute SNL skit and helped round it out to a full-fledge feature production.
All in all, I thought it was a fun movie that I would recommend others to see as long as you aren’t expecting anything more than the usual Will Ferrell “frat boy” humor. As to whether I’d recommend you see it in a theater or wait for the DVD, I’d recommend waiting for DVD honestly. While I was not disappointed that I paid good money to see it, I would have felt like I got more of a value if I’d been able to see it for only $4.00. That’s really your call though since some people may value this type of movie higher than I do. Either way, I recommend it and hopefully you’ll enjoy it.
