Detroit Auto Show 2007

2007 Mustang Cobra

This past weekend I attended the Detroit Auto Show as I do every year and, as expected, it was amazing! I’ve always been a huge “car guy” and this is a great place to see not only the future of the auto industry but also all the exotic cars you’d never see in real life most of the time unless you live in a VERY high-end neighborhood. For instance, check out these two examples:

Aero-X

Murcielago

The first car is the Saab Aero-X which is obviously something you’ll never see in production any time soon, but it definitely shows the direction that automakers are taking in making cars more high-tech and streamlined. The second car is a Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster which is a 640HP convertible supercar that retails for around $350,000. As I said, you’ll probably never see either of these cars in real life but the show is a great chance to check them out!

The two other big draws at the show for me this year were the new concepts for the Chevy Camaro and the Ford Mustang.

Camaro Convertible

Mustang Concept

The top picture is obviously the new Camaro Convertible concept but they said its “pretty much what you’ll be seeing in production” during the speech they gave on it. I think this looks a lot better than the hardtop concept they were showing last year at the show and I say this for two reasons: last year’s concept looked too “futuristic” if you will and let’s face it, this car always looks better as a convertible. Chevy said the hardtop model will be available for purchase as a 2009 model which means it will go on sale sometime in late 2008. The convertible version will go on sale the following year so look for it around late 2009 as a 2010 model.

The bottom picture is the new Mustang concept done by an Italian design firm. You can definitely see the Italian-inspired lines in this car which gives it a much more sleek profile than the current models do. Now granted this is only a concept at this point but it does point to the direction they plan to go with the Mustang name and that direction is high performance AND great looks. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we started to see the next generation of Mustang coming out sometime in the 2009/2010 range to help it compete with the then new Camaro. I can’t wait to see how that battle turns out this time!

And last but not least, I have to toss in a few shots of car models at the show since that’s the other thing guys go to a show like this to see. Let me say that the crop of girls this year wasn’t nearly as nice as last years but I think I managed to catch some of the better ones. Here you go:

Girl 1

Girl 2

Girl 3

The first girl was one of two at the Lamborghini area but I couldn’t get a good shot of the second girl… trust me I tried. The second girl was demoing the new Lexus IS-F (my next car if I have anything to say about it). And the third girl was showing off the new and improved Dodge Avenger (which looks like a mini-Charger if you ask me).

Lastly, if you want to see all the pictures I took you can check out my Flickr gallery HERE. There’s over 160 photos of everything and anything that I found interesting at the show. And speaking of interesting things, here’s a little video I took of a really cool water display that was running in the Jeep area of the show:

That’s all for now but if you have questions on any of the pictures in the gallery or just questions in general about the show, please feel free to leave me some comments on this post and I’ll be sure to respond to them in a timely manner.
