Golf show, bowling, and HD-DVD’s… oh my!

by Mike on January 8, 2007

This was a busy weekend for many reasons but I’ll do my best to cover as much of it as possible:

Things started out badly when I had to run my wife to the ER on Thursday night due to her extremely high temperature and excessive vomiting/nausea. After almost an hour waiting to be seen, we finally got to speak with a doctor and he said she had a new viral infection that has been going around and gave her shot to stop the vomiting and some ibuprofen to bring down the fever. He said she’d just have to wait it out though since there’s not much they can do about viral infections… they just have to run their course. We went home that night and I put her in bed where she promptly fell asleep (a side effect of the shot). I then called my boss and told him I’d be working from home on Friday due to my wife’s illness since she had asked me earlier to stay home and help her.

I spent most of Friday taking care of my wife (giving her pills as needed, bringing her water and jello, etc.) and working on some SQL queries for work. She was in horrible shape and stayed in bed pretty much all day and part of the evening. She finally emerged from the bed and showered that evening and she finally started to feel better somewhat after that. We ended up spending most of the night watching some movies I’d rented (Snakes on a Plane and The Sentinel… reviews coming soon) until she finally had enough and headed back to bed. I spent the remainder of the night doing my usual late Friday night activity… playing Gears Of War online for hours on end with a buddy of mine via Xbox Live.

Saturday started out better for the wife since she was obviously feeling a bit better and was up and moving around (doing dishes, washing laundry, etc.). I slept in as usual since I’d been up till 5am playing games and got up just in time to get ready to go meet my buddy at the Cincinnati Golf Show in downtown Cincinnati at the Duke Energy Center (on a side note, the renovation they did on the old convention center downtown to make it the new Duke Energy Center is amazing… it’s never looked better!). And yes, I did confirm with my wife that she would be ok alone before I left… I’m not THAT big of a prick. Anyway, the golf show was fun and I even got a chance to have my swing analyzed for the first time ever. According to the pro, my fundamentals are good and so is my stance but my backswing seems to go “up” too much instead of “back” like it should. He also said I need to learn to clear my hips more during the turn on my downswing. Both good pieces of advice I plan to put to use this coming spring when I start hitting the course again. I also found a great deal on a swing trainer so I ended up buying that for some off-season help. While we did score a couple free rounds of golf at some local courses that had booths there, our biggest score was a coupon book for all most of the major golf courses in the Cincinnati area. The cost of the book was only $40 and we’ll make that back the first time or two we use the coupons! Given how much we golf in a season, I think we’ll come out way ahead on this one. LOL

After the golf show we headed up to Dayton, OH, to my buddy’s house to play some more Gears Of War online before we head out to bowl later that evening. As usual, our time playing Gears was spent lamenting how horrible we are at the game and how much we hate having our asses handed to us by 12 year old gaming prodigies. LOL It’s all in good fun though in the end and we know this. Besides, the best way to get better at something is to keep playing people better than you and studying what they do. Hopefully we’ll be as good at this game as we are at Halo 2 multiplayer! Either way, we played for a few hours and then headed out to the bowling alley for their “late night special”.

We arrived at the bowling alley a little later than we’d like (about 12:20am… the special runs from midnight to 2:30am) but that’s what we get for trying to squeeze in one last match in Gears. The “late night special” allows you basically to bowl all you want for $32… which is a great deal for hardcore bowlers such as Don and I. We’ll usually get in 7-9 games in that time span on a good night and even though we were running late we still managed to get in a solid seven games. Unfortunately my bowling skill was less than stellar so my best game of the night was a measly 187 (for those of you who no nothing of bowling, 300 is the best possible score so hopefully that puts it in perspective)! Don had a better night than I did but not by much. His high game for the night was a 232 but all the rest of his games were in the 180′ish range. This isn’t unusual though as he is a better bowler than me… but I still hate losing honestly. GRR! By 2:30am we were both worn out and hungry so we headed over to Perkins to get some food and chat about various things past and present. Next thing we knew it was 6am and time to head for home. Yep… three and a half hours of chatting about nothing… we’re a damn Seinfeld episode in real life. LOL

Sunday was pretty dull as usual… get up around noon, get some lunch for the wife and I (she finally felt up to eating a McDonald’s hamburger… first real food she’d had since early Thursday), and watched some TV. I finally got around to hooking up my new a href=”http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html%3FASIN=B000JHO4L0%26tag=leghumpercom-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=/o/ASIN/B000JHO4L0%253FSubscriptionId=0EMV44A9A5YT1RVDGZ82″ title=”View product details at Amazon”>Xbox 360 HD DVD Player that afternoon so we watched my new copy of Batman Begins on HD-DVD that I got along with the player. I have to say that I honestly don’t see a huge difference in picture quality over my old DVD’s but then again my regular DVD player already upconverts everything to 1080i so I guess that could be why. I mean there was a noticeable difference in sharpness here and there and the color was more vibrant in general but for those of you expecting something outstandingly different I think you may be in for a shock. I also have to bitch about the fact that I was under the impression that HD-DVD movies would be show in 16:10 but instead they’re still 16:9… so they appear “letterboxed” on my 16:10 HDTV! I’m not happy about this but perhaps this is just due to the filming process and not the HD-DVD format itself. I’ll be watching King Kong on HD-DVD this coming weekend (which came with the player) so we’ll see how it compares to Batman. I’ll report back more on this after that viewing. Anyway, back to the story, after the movie Michelle headed to bed and I spent the rest of the night watching several episodes of the first season of Farscape on the Media Center PC until I got too tired to stay awake and headed for bed.

Well there you have it folks… another weekend summary that took far too long to type and is far too boring for more of you to read! Unfortunately for you, I do this for myself first and you second so deal with it. LOL Watch for my weekend movie reviews tomorrow and my coverage of the Detroit Auto Show next Sunday (with pictures).
